Mercury Safe is NOT Mercury Free
Recently, I thought I would run a little google research. So, I typed in “Mercury Safe Dentistry”. After diving into the choices I was given, I found the following options:
- Mercury-free dental services
- Eco-Friendly Dentistry (ok?…)
- Mercury amalgam removal
- “Safe” removal (although this practice knowingly doesn’t have the system in place for actual “safe” requirements)
- Natural Dental Care
- Natural Dental Spa
So, to anyone that has researched the dangers of silver amalgam fillings, this list would seem to give them some options, right? Hold on a second. I typed in “Mercury Safe”, which is a world away from all the options listed above. Even the one option advertised as mercury safe is wrong because they don’t even know what they are.
So, what sets Mercury Safe apart from everyone else? Safety. At IAOMT, which is the nation’s leader in science-based biological dentistry, they have developed rigorous recommendations for removing existing dental mercury amalgam fillings to assist in reducing the potential negative health outcomes of mercury exposure to patients, dental professionals, dental students, office staff, and others. The IAOMT’s recommendations are known as the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART).
Dentists that don’t use silver amalgam material may be considered mercury-free, but NOT mercury safe. The safety comes in play upon the removal process.
